➠Formylation of phenol with chloroform in alkali solution is known as Reimer Tiemenn Reaction.
➠This reaction is carried out by refluxing of an alkaline solution of phenol with chloroform at 60 degree centigrade followed by the distillation of excess chloroform and acidified the solution with H2SO4.

➠Mechanism:-
➠Benzene doesn't give the Reimer Tiemenn reaction because benzene is not nucleophilic enough to attack on the weak electrophile :CCl2.
➠While as phenol forms the phenoxide ion which is a strong nucleophile and have a tendency to attack attack on weak electrophile :CCl2.
