➠This reaction involves the formation of a Mannich base by condensing the secondary amine and a formaldehyde and a compound containing an active hydrogen (which can form an enol in acidic medium). 
➠E.g.
➠Mechanism:-
➠In case of an unsymmetrical ketone, a more substituted enol will be formed preferentially. E.g.
➠By using primary amine, a disubstituted Mannich base is formed. E.g.
➠By using ammonia (NH3), a trisubstituted Mannich base is formed. E.g.
